Verdict: THAMES FESTIVAL 2011 was bloody good fun!

What an amazing location! Right at the base of Tower Bridge one of London's most iconic structures!

Thank you for all the people that came to see me, chatted and bought my wares. It was a fab weekend filled with boats, tourists, hot dogs and contending with the wind (challenging when you have screen prints on your table).

Greetings All!

I have been away from blogging land for such a long time..and here is why! I have been travelling!

This was my 1st experience in Asia ( I can tick it off the list now!) and it was spectacular! I have never been so surprised, challenged, out of my comfort zone, inspired, amused, gobsmacked in one trip.

Thank goodness I had a group of very special friends to share it with. So if you have yet to do 'Asia' I suggest you get on it......here is my top 5 for your trip.
1) Carefully select the group to travel with! Anyone who claims they don't like noodles or rice is out immediately. People with good knowledge of card games in a bonus. Good bant, no mood swings v important.
2) Get yourself a guide book....you won't pay any attention to the book until you are in the actual country then within seconds it will turn into your bible.
3)Take an amazballs camera with you. yes that really expensive one you bought that you are scared to damage. This is after, the reason you bought the bloody thing.
4) Say 'Yes'. So you are out of the hum drum of your normal life...time to experience everything...so you better start saying yes to things. NB this does not apply to snakes blood, ignore 'The Beach'.
5)Dress the part, embrace the filth and and go with the flow. If the locals stare, just stare back...this will land you in a 5 minute starring contest with a middle aged Vietnamese woman on a non air conditioned bus but will certainly pass a little time while your body attempts to survive in 42C heat! Your a local now! Do as they do!

Hello Y'all!

Artsmart was blimin' great! Sunshine, hoards of art looking people and a collection of 100 fab-u-lous stalls! Here are some pics for you to enjoy if you couldn't make it along! We had our screen prints, cushions, tees and canvases out and sending them out into the world couldn't be more fun!

The excellent combinations of stalls meant there was definitely something for everyone and it meant I had some shopping to do aswell!!

Marcel Dzama

This weekend I had the chance to do some touristy arty cultural fun in that there London town as my dear friend Megan was visiting.

We were drawn to the Tate Modern to view the Taryn Simon exhibition but it was the work of Marcel Dzama that captured my imagination. A canadian artist who lives and works in New York, Dzama has a delicate style drawing humans, animals and creating a world of his own hybrids. The dark edge and humour to his work draws the viewer in as the narrative is not always clear on initial inspection.

Watercolour and pen are his tools of choice with specific muted colour palette that runs throughout. His style initially appears naive and understated but veers away from this with a complex undertone and subplot. The viewer is constantly questioning 'what is happening in this picture?'
I feel quite inspired and my unleash my imagination with a pen and paper and see what hybrids I can create especially ones with little sweaters on!

The Correspondents!!!!!!

Place: Charity event in Cargo, Shoreditch, London, When: last night.

This band is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!

Last night I danced, bounced, bopped and got covered in glitter whilst watching this ingenious band The Correspondents! I was a 1st timer seeing them with my old timer friends who insisted we had to stay, miss the last train home so we could see them and man was it worth it!

They are Mr Bruce (front man with the moves) and Chucks (Dj decks man). The energy levels in the room soared as soon as they were on stage and just so amazballs to watch live! Catchy rhythmic tunes where dance meets swing. Mr Bruce's singing/beatboxing/energy over the top mixed in with samples from every decade. It was eclectic dubby dancey swing with piazz!! ( i should probably 'review' for a living?!) and finished off with a jungle book sample!

This is one of the two black and white canvases I made...a floral explosion of fabric leaves, paper flowers, ink drawings and spray paint! Oodles of detail and time went into these and they are perfect for a contemporary living space!

Vintage Wallpaper Canvas. This is another labour of love. Using collaging I cut out florals from genuine wallpaper from 195o's. Combined with my own paper drawing and illustrations directly on the canvas. There is so much detail on the canvas and the longer you look the more you find.

Bonnie Scotland

Rain, Haggis, Mountains called Bens, Iron Bru, Kilts, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. I have had the most wonderful taste of Scotland. Arrrr WEEEEEE noooo, Ya weeee scottash Lassie.

During the visit this weekend I discovered the work of artist David Farrer. These paper mache constructed heads are his creation and are on display in Cameron House on the edge of Loch Lomand.

They are a fantastical light hearted approach to the traditional game stuffed and mounted. Much larger than you think, the sculptures are constructed from recycled materials. A wire frame gives the original shape and layers of paper mache (yes think back to those times when you were 5 and you made a terrific mess paper mache-ing of a saturday). He uses newspapers, magazines and images that often juxtapose (arty farty word) the creature itself. To give you an example, the Rames head is branded with Motorola. Up close the construction tells its own story.

When owls take over the world!

Happy monday fish friends.

I hope one day owls will take over the world. I want to share with you my 2 latest discoveries in the design field. Sass and Belle amazballs, cute label.

These guys have their own shop in covent garden garden and stock in shops up and down the country! They are synonymous with cute girly style and I appreciate their mixture of prints and patterns. I own the owl cushion, keyring and bunting and quite frankly that isn't enough.

The second discovery du jour is the work of Petra Boase I stumbled across this label after buying a sheet of lovely printed wrapping paper. Creating printed fabric, mugs, greeting cards, notebooks and much more in the cuteness department. With a sugar sweet colour palette and vintage influences this label crosses fashion to stationary to home.

Perfect for gift ideas and styling inspiration....so if anyone needs some gifting ideas (no not for me this time) then take a look!
This piece of wrapping paper is rocking my world right now! I bought it to use and now it is hung on my wall as art! Check out the beautifully collaged animals particually the owls!

How to be a unicorn!!

Greetings!
Forget the royal wedding I dressed up as a unicorn this weekend to celebrate the important landmark birthday of my friend Natalie! We partook in a little prancing round the park all in different animal costume under the gorgeous British sun!

Here is your step by step guide to achieving the 'unicorn' look...
Firstly gather together a giant purple unicorn. Horses/ponies/zebra or any type of animal that looks pretty big will do. What you are looking for is to be able to fit your torso INSIDE that animal after a little tweaking.
Take a pair of scissors straight to the beast and cut down the belly and back. Then stick your hand right inside and yank out the stuffing.
All you need now is to yank your animal over your hips, attached some braces and VOILA you have your costume!

Royal wedding fever!!

Hello Kids!,

I am jumping aboard the royal wedding bandwagon! Tomorrow (day of wedding) I am settling down to watch the wedding from my tellybox....then later in the afternoon going to a street party in that there London town.

I thought I'd share a couple of my favourite pieces of memorabilia for the day. Unknown plate of awesomeness, Cath Kidston tea towel and Rob Ryan plate.

Particularly the "should have been me" plate, girls up and down the country are watching their chances of being a princess disappear before their very eyes.. there is still Harry I suppose!

A giant arts and crafts market hosted by University of the Arts on July 1st and 2nd, 10am- 6pm!

Yes indeedy! this is going to be a big one! 100 artists, craftmens and stall holders alike will be gathering in Chelsea College of art for a 2 day event! There will be food, live music and oodles of shopping to be had!

Devon in Histamatic!

Well fish fans, you may remember a couple of weeks ago I spent the weekend down in Devon with some lovely chums...Here are a couple of photos from the weekend!
I'm a big fan of the histamatic app on the iphone ( i don't actually have an iphone) but I manage to surround myself with people that do!
Dreamy, lazy 70's style photos, distort the colour and light and basically make it look like your parents photo album from 'when they met', minus the platforms and the hair.

Full credit to Jo (check out her blog here ) for these photos of the beautiful town of Dartmouth and a wonderful wkend spent with friends. To top it all off, its only bloody, 5 thousand bank holidays of easter/may fun coming up again, here's to royal weddings, resurrection of christ and the caramel bunny.

Invasion of the KittyKat!

This weekend saw the arrival of a new house buddy! 'Steven" the cat! Ok he's not really called Steven but we thought it would be nice to call him after one of us, so Steve, my housemate, was the lucky chosen one!
Steven the cat appeared outside our kitchen door this weekend and meowed until someone let him in!
60% of the house are keen Cattyfiles so it seemed stupid not to let him in and feed him tuna, cuddle him, take him upstairs and generally grow way to attached to a passing cat.

Am secretly hoping he will leave wherever he lives now, move in with me and we will be very happy together.
Hi to the landlord if you are reading this...all of the above didn't actually happen, erm.

Hello all!

Well I spend hours drawling the internet on a daily basis for inspirations, tit bits and to stay on top of things for trends and whatnot but I actually 1st viewed Rob Ryan's work in the V&A shop in Kensington, London. I was mulling something over this morning when his screen print popped into my head....a little research later and I have uncovered a multitude of his work.

The style, so delicate and feminine, created as if from dripping ink mixed with thoughts and feelings. What I find so nice is how the negative space becomes the positive space by the cutting out technique. His original paper works are hand cut and he has a series of screen prints, mugs, tee towels all in a similiar style. Very inspiring and I'm off to drop some BIG hints as its my birthday coming up soon!

70's and Topshop Love!

70's love!! I have gone and got a bit giddy about the lovely summery 70's inspired tones hitting the highstreet at the mo. I have a couple of pieces in fleshy pink, burnt orange and turtle grey....but quite frankly I need to some more to create the whole look.

Topshop is floating my boat, closely followed by Miss Selfridge (wherever Topshop goes Miss Selfridge is somewhere close hiding in the bushes). Its just getting me all in the mood to DRESS for summer , let alone pub gardens, bbqs...I have pulled out last years ballet pumps (they still go right?) and sky scraping wedges (must practice how to wear them again in prep) for the HEAT!

Just For The Halibut

While on my little adventure in London, I got chance to see my old NY housemate and good friend Louise Salmon!

Louise Salmon is the master mind behind 'Just For The Halibut', where she has all sorts of goodies for your eyes to see. Tees, limited edition screen prints, cushions, bags.. there is nothing this girl can't do!

Oh Crikey I sound like a hippy! 2011 is currently turning out to be a turbulent emotional rollercoaster so far...mind you we are only 11 days in so I'm sure the year is not doomed. As we are all trying desperately to reconnect with our lives post xmas, festivities lull....new plans and changes are key!.....details to follow on Just For The Halibut's new plans...

Creative Fair & Creative Enterprise Awards, ECCA
Accessories, Design Art, Furniture, Product Design

The Creative Enterprise Awards is an initiative of The Enterprise Centre for the Creative Arts (ECCA), which offers free creative business services and advice to students and graduates of the University of the Arts London who have either set up their own business within the last 3 years, or are thinking about starting one or going freelance.

The Awards took place in November at Candid Arts, Islington and the space was also filled with a variety of stalls manned by UAL students and graduates, with festive pressie ideas, cards etc, all for under £10. In fact, there was a prize given to the Best Stand at the Creative Fair which was won by Louise Salmon for her label Just for the Halibut, selling colourful screen printed cushions, bags, scarves and t-shirts. A special mention went to Cabinet of Curiosity by Caroline Collinge, who is currently studying for a PhD at LCF and creates beautiful pieces from pleated and folded newsprint.

Ecca Case Study: Just For The Halibut Interview!

Fresh from landing the Best Stand Award at our inaugural Creative Fair ECCA reeled in Louise Salmon for a quick catch up to find out more about her creative enterprise Just For The Halibut.

You spent three years working in New York after graduating from LCF in 2005. What were you doing out there and how did that opportunity come about?

I was very lucky to get an internship as a print designer over there and promptly fell in love with the city. I had an amazing time working as a print designer for US high street fashion creating placement and all over prints for mens and womenswear. I had only graduated 3 months earlier when the opportunity arrived so I traded in my round the world ticket which had been my 21st birthday present and bought a flight to NYC as I knew it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up!

I'm sure there's a lot of UAL students that would jump at the chance of working in the Big Apple. Do you have any advice for those looking to work out there?

Yes, if you fancy it definitely go for it. After a friend got an internship for her placement year I was really inspired to get one myself. I started researching all the textile and print studios in New York, contacted trade shows and cold called designers in America to see if they were looking for interns. I was full of enthusiasm and had a fresh portfolio full of photos from graduate fashion week and nothing to loose. I was really lucky to have someone to go with as it can be daunting moving to a city abroad. The visa process in America can be tough but there are other countries that offer a one year working visa which is perfect if you want to see the world and forward your career at the same time.

How did your textiles business 'Just for the Halibut' first start?

I wanted to start my own business for a while but it wasn't until I went freelance and started working with other designers that I felt it was the right moment to start. I had been inspired by seeing others working on their own creations and building their businesses and so started making my own stuff. I adore screen printing and it was really great to get into the studio and print some of my original designs.

What inspired the move from working for someone else to setting up your own business and going freelance?

It was a tough decision to go freelance but it gave me the freedom to explore different areas of fashion. I still work as a print designer for the studio in America but it now means I have time to do my own prints. I'm also currently working with a designer here in London, Mrs Jones. She is a stylist and designer and creator of the iconic white "Kylie" jumpsuit. I love working with her as it gives me the opportunity to be involved in video and photoshoots. I am currently working on some prints for her new collection.

Did you seek out any funding or advice when going about setting up your business?

No, Just For The Halibut started off very small and grew gradually. I made all the decisions as I went along.I didn't want any financial strain so didn't get a loan though I have sought advice on the business side of things. As a designer I have really enjoyed learning how to run a business as I have spent so long focusing on the creative aspects.

How do you find the time to juggle work whilst making the products you sell?

Just For The Halibut is a labour of love so I can often be found doing things in the evening and weekends. I'm lucky to be surrounded by other creative people who are always working on little projects themselves so there is always someone in the studio to work alongside to keep me company. I hope to devote more time to it as the business grows and I'm lucky enough to be able to make a living out of doing something I love.

There's been a real resurgence in craft and the hand-made of late across all aspects of art and design. Do you think it is a passing trend or something that's here to stay?

Here to stay I hope! I'm such a fan of going to markets and craft fairs and seeing independent designers and their wares. It gives you a great idea of just how many people are out there doing their thing. Notonthehighstreet.com and etsy.com have done amazing things to boost independent designers in giving them a platform to sell without even having to leave their house.

What's the most challenging aspect of doing what you do?

Juggling different task and being organized has been my biggest nemesis so far. Running a business requires lots of organization, being on top of things and planning in advance. As a messy designer this has been a challenge to overcome. I'm still messy but I plan my mess in advance now!

As well as at craft fairs your products are also available online at Etsy.com. What has been your experience selling you products this way?

Etsy is a really good platform for designers to showcase their products to the world and to see what else is out there. My most rewarding experience of selling so far has been doing a stall. People are so interested in who you are and what you do that you get to have a chin wag and wrap up your products when they sell. It's like you get to send them off to a good home after nurturing them and seeing them grow!

Part of your prize for winning the Best Stall award is a table at the East London Design Show next year. No doubt you'll have yet more exciting things on sale by then, how do you do about developing new ideas?

I'm so excited to be part of the East London Design Show next year. I went along this year and there is such as colourful array of products. I totally inspired and ended up doing quite a bit of my Christmas shopping there. I'll definitely be working on some new products before then... something a bit christmassy for all my fish fans.

Craft fairs are often busy, bustling affairs. How do you make sure you stand out from the crowd?

Arrive first and make sure you get the best table! I think its best to focus on the visual impact of the stand. Make the products on display clear to the customer and accessible. People also like the interactive element of stalls so don't be afraid of just having a chat and don't worry about the hard sell so much. I like to keep a strong colour theme throughout the stall and little touches like some decoration and a banner look great.

Craft fairs selling handmade produces from the capital's creative community are springing up all over London. What's the best way to find out when the next one is happening?

I write my own blog and follow many other designer's blogs. It's a great way of advertising an event, sharing funny things, merriments and generally chatting about stuff that interests you. Also Timeout is great if you don't mind scouring through all the listing and join as many mailing list if you can, you never know what events will appear in your inbox.

Hello all you lovely fish fans around the world.

Well life in Just For The Halibut land has been hectic-a-mungo of late but deliciously filled with festive fun, mince pies, loved ones and preparing for the excitement of this week!

Is anyone else's life like a buses? Nothing happens then EVERYTHING HAPPENS AT ONCE. Ok the buses analogy doesn't really apply here (when in Rome...) but this week is so packed with excitement I'm off my fish fins!
Top 5 highlights of the week...

1) The Jelly Empire creator Selina is coming to stay from the far shores of NYC, I'm so happy, we will have hugs, mulled wine and skip down the street holding hands!

2) Just For The Halibut is having a stall at LEATHER LANE MARKET on thursday and friday of this week, 16/17th. Come along and say hello, finish off your xmas shopping and see if I've frozen to death! 10-4pm, yes just pull a sicky and come along.

3)Just For The Halibut is having a stall at QUEENS CRESCENT MARKET on Saturday 18th Dec! Yes its a double whammy, 3 in a row style fish stall off. Come along if you can't make leather lane(probably because you have a proper job) and Saturday is your only day to come and see me! Directions and details to follow!

4)Our house Christmas Buffet happens on sunday, we plan to decorate the house, fill it with delicious people and delicious smells (the 2 go hand in hand), and wish everyone a wonderful Christmas before we all scatter off to our respective family homes.

5) I'm going to my 1st Christmas carol concert with my lovely man and his family. There is nothing more festive than listening to xmas tunes with a santa hat and holding hands with the one you love, awww tis the season and all.

What an amazing night! My first stall, and quite frankly I had a great time. I met some great people, made some sales and yes.....WON the competition for BEST STALL. Thank you ECCA. So I trundled upstairs to hear the winner of the best stall, only to stand there and hear....."and the winner is Just For The Halibut"!!
Needless to say I had NOT prepared anything to say as it was so unexpected...I think I bumbled some thanks and some congratulations and legged it off stage with my bottle of CHAMPERS in hand!!
So I'm going to thank the people who I really should right now (I've gone all Halle Berry at the Oscars here)
...to all the people at Ecca who put a great evening together and brought together many creative people from all disciplines.
.....to my tolerant and suportive flatmates, friends and boy.....who've all helped me and encouraged and put up with a phenomenal amount of mess making!

Hello all! Just for the halibut has had a hectic weekend doing muchos preparation for the ECCA stall on wednesday ( please do come along, deatils to follow) I've been sewing up, tagging labels, taking photos, making banners & display frames and admin admin admin! and of course a massive thank you to the Just for the halibut helpers, you know who you all are!

Graffiti'd London

Spray paint galore!!! I'm a big fan of Graffiti, see previous posts, when its done tastefully. I'm always snapping away as I think graffiti is such a temporary art form, turn around, and its gone!
Saturday saw me pottering round Broadway Market, I went to see my friend Lizzie's stall of trinkets and wonderments.... read her blog here, She is a talented lady making fashions and jewellery and braving the english weather every week.

I was lucky enough on my travels down to Old St to find Graffiti ACTUALLY HAPPENING. Spray cans, mess, masks, on lookers, and slightly abstract art. This estate agents was being shown who's boss.

This is pretty good too, made up of spots, look closely! Cross eye'd is under rated if you ask me.

This is one of my favs. This face has be etched out of a painted wall. Its very hard to see in a photo but the brown is brick underneath...I would recommend going to see for yourself, Found next to the Big Chill Bar just off Brick Lane. Most reasonably priced gallery is the streets of London!

GUNS 'N'ROSES!

Guns and Flipping Roses last nightin the O2. It was awesome. We rocked out hard with Axl Rose, during November Rain he played the piano with his foot. That in my books, is pretty cool.
Bursts of flames on stage, red and green shoots of fireworks during guitar solos. Tattoos, crazy GNR tee shirts in every direction, mohawks, men with ponytails, and some great people to share it all with. I recommend it folks, get that eyeliner on and rock it out!

This is incredible. I've had this National Geograhic image stuck to my wall for the about the past year as it fascinates me. A splash of sea water magnified 15 times. Mother nature is a print designer if you ask me. Her colours, icons, scale and composition is a winner. I can't help thinking we should be putting more stuff under the microscope to see who's living there. Mmm, maybe people do. AND maybe those people are called scientists. I've just come across this pic of plankton soup of the world wide web and wanted to share. Those little guys are out there, hanging out, unseen by the human eye. the mind boggles!

Autumnal Delights

Autumn is officially here! This pleases me. It ultimately will lead straight on to winter which will please me much less. Delicious sunny cold days with walks in forests with friends, pub lunches, trees turning from yellow to gold to red.
This is Delamere forest in Cheshire where I spent a chilled weekend in the country catching up with old friends and quietly brainstorming to myself the benefits of this time of year.
This is what I've come up with so far..
*Glorious weather and refections upon a summer well spent.
* Pumpkins in the shops, inspiring me to do some carving and pumpkin pie making.
*Scented candles, ok this one isn't typical but something about this time of year makes me want to bring delicious smells from outside inside.
and
* new coats, boots and woolens. I have spotted this gorgeous coat by Biba. House of Fraser have re-launched this 70's labels with new key autumn pieces with fresh prints. ME LIKEY. now to find some pennies as this feline number is £165. I must have it.

Camber Sands!

Camber Sands! 3 things come to mind now when I think of the sands, firstly Inbetweeners and that episode when they go to Camber Sands caravan club. Secondly Caravans and thirdly a wonderful group of friends. So we trudled off to Camber Sands, me at the helm of my little Polo packed full of funny people to arrive to a grey grey shoreline. I always get a little over excited at a weekend away and have notoriously bad luck with the weather. his last weekend was no exception....it rained and rained and rained but I still had an incredibly fun weekend and James celebrated his 30th admirably!This is what it was supposed to look like....

A wicked selection of people, a 3 storey log cabin, a roast dinner, silly party drinking games ,
a photoshoot and a lethal punch! What brilliant time! I now have lurgy as a result of having such a good time! Thanks guys!!x x x

The Good, The Bad and The Weekend away.

Hello all! I haven't posted in a couple of weeks but have a valuable excuse. I've returned to England, moved house and tried to get everything in gear. Just For The Halibut is my priority fish fans so fear not, new excitement is on the horizon including a new website. All will be revealed!
In the meantime I've been to some shows ,one was brilliant and the other truly terribly but for the benefit of comparison I'm glad I attended the latter!

V. ~Good 9/10 Ghost Stories, a play at the Duke of York Theatre in Covent Garden. An unusual style of play set to scare and delight the audience. I loved it altho I prepared myself mentally for the fear factor. Ideal date to take a lady on if you would like to the squeal and jump on you several times during the show. I was lucky to have my boyfriend sitting next to me to hold my hand but the combination of the theatre effects in lighting and sound, the fact that if you leave the theatre re-admittance is prohibited and you aren't allowed to talk about the show once its over (its like fight club, the 1st rule of fight club is don't talk about fight club) makes it a really good show. V. Bad 2/10 Going The Distance, film attempting to entertain in cinemas nation wide. Starring Drew Barrymore and Justin (looks like a neglected puppy) Long. I still may have not quite recovered from watching this film last night. It was a cheese board of predictability! Admittedly we did set out to eat popcorn and chocolate, chill out and engage in a chick flick so something with Drew Barrymore in I thought, must be good! All I want to know is who wrote it...sat back in their chair and thought....thats quite good, we should make it into a film. Non engaging emotional scenes that just filled in the gaps between the 3 jokes in the whole film, I failed to laugh, I did think about crying and left feeling frustrated that they didn't feel the need to challenge the audience in any way. Surely do they not realise that we have all been in long distance relationships? Ok, I don't think that was a plot spoiler but that is the pretense for the film, weak weak weak, like my feelings how attractive Juston Long is. If a film is coming to be rubbish I at least need some totty to get me through.
The weekend away is this weekend to celebrate my housemate's/co-worker's 30th..happy bday James....updates this week! Happy weekend y'all

Two Sided, probably my favourite shop on the planet.

Whilst this blog is turning into Louise's rough guide to her travels this summer I have to share this shop I have found with all of you. We took ourselves off for a day of exploring and came across this little beauty of a shop in the outskirts of Chicago. Think Portabello market in London meets Urban Outfitters and they go on a date to the Contemporary Museum of Art in Chicago covered in chocolate sauce and everything is reasonably priced. Are you with me yet? This shop was the definition of lush and I fell just a little bit in love. I have always had secret fantasies about owning my own shop filled with trinkets, art, cats and things which make me laugh. All for folks who are as cheap as I am. SOCK MONKEY MADNESS

Knitted Monkey Madness. When I saw this exhibition I did a little squeal and decided this was undoubtedly blog worthy! This is the work of LA based artist Mike Kelly featured in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago....a brilliant day out for anyone available to pop to Chicago any time soon!
Kelly's 'Craft Morphology Flow Chart' 1991 is a collection of children' toys from past years. Religiously scouring thrift stores (charity shops) flea markets and yard sales Kelly to build up a varied collection. Items that evoke a feeling of the past and feel dated, represented in real and photographic form. Hand knitted sock monkeys of all shapes and sizes, curly poodle dogs and those crazy clowns with the curly long necks.

This actually happened......

The Shiny Silver Bean of Chicago! At least thats what the tourists call it, also known as 'Cloud Gate' by the artist Anish Kapoor. We found this little gem in Millennium Park....its so much fun to take pictures with, in the reflection of, next to, lying upside down of etc etc. My fav bit is the fantastic reflection of the skyrise building of downtown and the distortion of the cityscape!

Just a minute away from the shiny bean in what I call 'Millennium park of arty fun' is this installation. Two 50ft high glass boxes known as the 'crown fountain'. Eerily the towers project the faces of Chicago citizens, very slowly moving so you have to pay attention. Every once in a while the expression of the face alters and a spurt of water comes from the mouth to the delight of the baking hot tourists. The ambiance and sense of fun these 2 towers created espeically for several hundred toddlers splashing about between them was refreshing for a central city park. This was flipping cool refreshing outdoor fun. Chicago you arty farty entertainer.

In amongst our journeying around the city and suburbs of Chicago we came across lots of street art including this fakey Banksy monkey ( well i think its fake, hard to tell tho...its unsigned). I'm such a massive fan of Graffiti (when its thoughtfully done) and street art I'm sharing some images with you!

Inspirational Philadelphia!

I've been spending some time in Philly of late, its my 2nd most explored city in the USA to date so I thought I'd share a couple images from the last couple of weeks. I find myself singing 'west Philadelphia born and raised , on the playground yeah I spend most of my days" and wistfully humming theme tunes as my soundtrack.

Renown for mosaics, murals and outdoor art Philly's vibe is softer and more personable than New York. The mosaics are constructed from mirrors, china wear and hand painted tiles and as intriguing as they are hazardous (highly recommended not to lean against!)

URBAN KNITTING!

O to the M to the G. I have experienced my 1st taste of Urban Knitting, also know as Guerrilla Knitting. How amazing is this!! A sweater on a tree. Urban Knitting is a group activity organized to clothe and adorn objects in our urban landscape. Knitters come from far and wide, pick their urban target and lovingly create patchwork squares which are fitted to said object. I had heard of this phenomenon and seen some amusing pics on the interweb but never actually seen the end product. This lucky tree has a patchwork designed sweater with lovely twisted braid detail and a little central patch that says "love you philly". Its so touching. My only concerns are how hot the tree must be (the weather is beautiful and scorching here) and how jealous all the other trees must feel. Tree fashion, you saw it here first!

Beautiful Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, USA

This is Bryn Mawr College on the outskirts of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, where I am lucky enough to be spending some time. Beautifully set in a leafy campus the buildings date back to 1830's. Proudly the college boasts of its most famous student Katherine Hepburn and her naked runnings into the fountain which is now a yearly tradition!! The emblem of Bryn Mawr is the owl found printed on everything....I'm getting quite inspired for some owly prints and most charming can be found carved out of stone and reading books. Many of the buildings have owls doing various things and its bringing me no end of joy!

I know this is terribly self indulgent but I just wanted to show some pics of Just For The Halibut tees being enjoyed out in the world. Its also high time I told you about the wonderful world of Mrs Jones. I have been lucky enough to design prints all over the world but I am very proud of some of my work for Mrs J (see clown tee). Stylist to the stars and creative force Fee Doran is a designer working under the label Mrs Jones in her studio in East London. The studio is a magical world of wonderment (i need some new words, preferably ones that make sense) and houses her back cataloge of outfits worn by Kylie, The Killers, Scissor Sisters and many many more. She is an advocate of young designers and recently had a launch party of her new collection featuring designs by Just For The Halibut. Her website merely skims the surface of her excellence and her blog is equally as fruity. Get your fill of clown prints for girls and boys by yours truly and enjoy a couple of snapshots of her studio.

Day something-or-other of summer 2010 its turning out to be gorgeous. The let downs of the summers of yester-year are fading away and I can't even remember that summer when it rained the whole time. Well ok I can but lets focus on the positives.
This is the latest in what is good....

Barbequed vegetable skewers with Haloumi cheese drizzled in pesto (dunked in spicy bbq sauce)

ok it might sound weird but this divine combination will only illuminate your taste buds and encourage you to pursue that 6th wine spritzer. trust me.

A Cat Called Glen

Since summer is in full swing in Londontown I thought I'd take a couple of new products into the garden (also referred to as the wilderness, land time forgot and the secret garden) to take a couple of pictures. New cushions in the shape of Salmons and Zebra Heads are about to hit my Etsy store but as you can see I got very distracted by the arrival of Glen, next doors cat so hung out with him instead.
